Cricket Australia has announced Canberra will host its first-ever Test match, but not for another three summers.

Manuka Oval will host a Test match between Australia and Sri Lanka during the 2018–19 summer of cricket, at the expense of Hobart's Bellerive Oval.

Manuka Oval has hosted eight one-day international games and will become the 10th Australian venue to host Test cricket.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said the announcement recognised the "continued growth of the sport not only in the ACT but the wider region".

"[It] is a testament to the effort being placed on participation in the territory with more than 32,000 playing cricket last season and this season on track for further increases," he said.

"With more than 1 million people living in the ACT and southern New South Wales region, we believe there is a great advantage in Canberra hosting a test match."

Cricket ACT chief executive Cameron French said "there has never been a more exciting time for cricket in the nation's capital".

"The announcement of a test match in 2018–2019, along with the proposed completion of the Phillip Oval High Performance Centre in the next 18 months continues to highlight the ACT's credentials as an asset for Australian Cricket," he said.

Earlier today, it was announced New Zealand would play a one-day international in Canberra for the first time during the Chappell-Hadlee series for the 2016–17 season, returning to Canberra after a successful PM's XI match last year.
